This summer, Antyx Community Arts Society’s Youth Arts Action program embarked on a journey through time with a special initiative called “Through the Decades.” This creative experience invited youth to explore the transformative power of art for social change by exploring the history of art movements from the 1960s to the present day.
“Through the Decades” was designed to immerse participants in the evolution of art as a tool for social commentary, self-expression, and community empowerment. Each week, the youth explored a different decade, uncovering the styles, techniques, and cultural contexts that shaped the art of the time. From the vibrant pop art of the 1960s to the street art of the 1980s, and beyond, participants engaged with the past to inspire their own creative expressions of today.
Our program offered a blend of hands-on activities, lively discussions, and reflective sessions that encouraged youth to think critically about the role of art in society. Participants learned how artists have historically used their work to address pressing social issues, and they were challenged to consider how they, too, can use art as a vehicle for positive change within their own communities.
The summer’s journey through the decades culminated in an open house event that brought together participants from Youth Arts Action and other Antyx programs. This celebration was a vibrant showcase of the new styles, techniques, and perspectives the youth had developed over the course of the summer. The event provided an opportunity for participants to share their work, collaborate with peers, and continue the conversation about the power of art to inspire change.
As we look back on the summer, we’re proud of the creativity and passion our young artists brought to “Through the Decades.” We look forward to seeing how they will continue to use art in their communities.
