On May 10th Belonging, a mural project, supporting diverse communities and mental wellness was unveiled to the public. The event was well attended, representatives from the organizations involved were present. Jeff Biers, from Cardel Rec South; Jason Lidberg, from Planet Youth Calgary; Jeffrey Wilkins, Antyx Community Arts and Makayla Krause, Facilitator for the project, also from Antyx.
Many stories were told, how the project came to be from that fateful day when Antyx, Planet Youth and Cardel first sat at the Shawnessy Community Action Team meeting, antidotes regarding the design process and how Taylor Swift’s likeness nearly made an appearance in the mural.
Approximately 100 people filled the hallway to listen and to take in the celebration. The youth involved were present and received an ovation from the crowd. The project was the result of many months of planning and manpower from all the organizations involved but the real stars were the youth. Designed and painted by the youth involved, our organization’s roles were truly that of support. This mural is for them, but more than that it’s for you the diverse community surrounding the community hub.
The inaugural Campfire Connections, fireside community gatherings immediately followed with great success, more than 170 people attended. Hundreds of hotdogs and marshmallows were roasted around the fire pits. Music stories and laughter filled the air.
