The Comics Program is a space for Youth to thrive creatively and emotionally, allowing for confidence and self-worth to flourish. This October, Youth gained new skills in traditional art and the comic medium while being able to express themselves freely.
We explored what identity meant to each of us- can identity change? Do we gain our sense of identity through family or friends? Throughout the program we discussed some famous comic book character identity struggles and conflicts and brainstormed why comics (and their characters) resonate with so many people of different backgrounds. We invited Youth to create their own iconic character with an Identity conflict unique and important to them!
We encouraged each other to share the “why” behind our artworks and learned how to edit and collaborate our original ideas with one another. By Week 9, each Youth created their own comic book cover that represents Identity to them and as we approach the conclusion of our cycle, we are getting excited to share these works with our community!
