At the end of the Youth Arts Action program, a zine workshop brought together a diverse group of youth from all the different locations where the program is held to Contemporary Calgary. This hands-on event was not only an opportunity to learn and create but also a celebration of the entire program’s cycle, ending with a pizza party.
What is a Zine?
So, what is a zine, you ask? A zine is more than just a piece of paper—it’s a declaration of identity, a catalyst for change, and a celebration of individuality. Zines are handmade mini magazines often dedicated to adding unheard voices to the community, typically focusing on niche topics or alternative viewpoints. What sets zines apart is their creative artistic composition, making them a powerful medium for self-expression and community engagement.
The Workshop Experience
Each participant joined a zine-making activity, exploring various formats and covering a wide range of subjects including hobbies, social issues and more. The beauty of zines lies in their accessibility and inclusivity—anyone can make one!
A Celebration of Success
The zine workshop ended with a pizza party, celebrating the hard work and creativity of all the participants during the 10 week cycle. It was a moment to reflect on the journey, share their creations, and enjoy the sense of community that had been created throughout the program.
